A major tactical military exercise commenced on Wednesday between Bastogne and Elsenborn.

Organised by the Chasseurs à Cheval Battalion, the exercise involves 600 soldiers from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Additionally, 180 vehicles will cover approximately 90 kilometres in the region. The aim is to enhance operational skills and international cooperation in reconnaissance.

“As reconnaissance troops we are always the first on the ground. Our goal is to gather information using various sensors, according to our motto ‘Your eyes and ears on the battlefield’,” explained Colonel Jean-François Verheust.

The exercise, visible to the public, aims to refine tactical procedures, train logistical capabilities, and promote knowledge exchange between countries with different procedures, added Colonel Verheust.

The exercise will unfold in several phases: training, information gathering, and directive development, and will culminate in manoeuvres. The manoeuvres will start on Sunday evening near Neufchâteau with two squadrons and conclude on 27 November near Elsenborn, followed by a troop withdrawal on 28 November that maintains visual contact with the enemy.
