Outgoing Belgian Minister for Climate, Zakia Khattabi, leading the Belgian delegation at COP29 in Baku, deemed the latest draft proposals presented by Azerbaijan on Thursday morning as "insufficient".
"The texts recently presented by the COP presidency clearly show that there is still much work to be done in Baku. The proposals concerning mitigation and financing are unacceptable for the European Union," stated the Belgian minister, who is a member of French-speaking greens, Ecolo.
Khattabi added that the current text does not "provide clear signals" regarding future national climate action plans. Nor does it adequately recognise or build upon last year’s decision on the Global Stocktake, particularly concerning the required energy transition.
The outgoing minister further noted that the COP29 presidency has not yet presented a text that can serve as a solid basis for negotiations on the new collective quantified financing goal.
Brussels Minister for the Climate Transition, Alain Maron (Ecolo), also criticised the proposed text, calling it "very weak". He asserted that there’s still considerable work to be done, representing Belgium in European coordination meetings.
The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, expected to conclude on Friday in Baku, aims to agree on a new collective climate financing goal to assist developing countries in facing climate change.
