The Brussels-Capital Region has adopted a provisional three-month budget in the absence of a government agreement.

The outgoing Brussels government has adopted a provisional budget for the first quarter of 2025 due to the region's pressing financial situation.

Known as a budget of "provisional twelfths", the strategy allows the government to spend just one-twelfth of its total 2024 expenditure (plus indexation) each month. This means it continues to meet key costs such as wages or paying invoices despite political restraints.

Outgoing Budget Minister Sven Gatz (Open VLD) says Brussels must limit its spending as much as possible until a new government is formed.

"While waiting for a new government, we must limit the expenditure of the Brussels Region to what is strictly necessary," the Minister said. "I hope that a new government can quickly form and draw up the multi-year budget for the next legislature. The financial situation of the Brussels Region needs this."

As it stands, there is no budget for the upcoming year, making provisional credits necessary to ensure the continuity of public services. The draft ordinance approved by the government on Thursday has made this possible. Provisional credits are calculated based on figures from the 2024 budget.
