Rail traffic is disrupted across the entire network on Friday morning due to winter weather conditions, the national railway operator SNCB announced on its website.
The company noted that winter conditions had disrupted train traffic across the network. Temperatures dropped overnight across the country, triggering the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) to issue a code yellow warning for slipperiness, ice and fog.
Due to these weather conditions, there were problems with switches and overhead wires in some places. As a result, several trains have been cancelled or delayed. "There were some problems this morning, but it's not like an entire railway line was broken," spokesperson Bart Crols told The Brussels Times.
This means problems will likely not last for the rest of the day.
Further issues
Due to a technical issue, the company's information system – which announces disruptions and network works – is also temporarily unavailable on the SNCB app and website.
"Only the app and website are currently affected by this technical problem," SNCB spokesperson Vincent Bayer explained. "Our teams are still analysing the cause and working to resolve it quickly."
SNCB has advised commuters to stay attentive to station announcements or consult the screens in stations.
Train traffic is also disrupted between Mons and La Louvière-Sud stations in Hainaut (Wallonia), due to a person-related accident at Obourg, the company confirmed on social media.
There are also disruptions at Gent-Sint-Pieters due to people walking on the tracks, Crols confirmed.
