Belgium’s so called BOB campaign started on Friday will continue until 2 February 2025.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
On Friday night, the E19/E42 motorway near Maisières, close to Mons, was closed from 10:30 pm to 1:30 am in the direction of France due to a significant roadside check.
The operation, organised for the launch of this year’s Bob campaign, caused major traffic disruptions.
Several dozen federal and local police officers, dog handlers, and other services, including customs officers, were mobilised.

“This action was broader than just the Bob campaign launch as it also involved crime checks, which had not been done in this region for a long time,” Jonathan Pfund, police spokesperson, told Belga News Agency.
“We are aware of the inconveniences these checks caused,” Pfund added. “A federal police helicopter was also deployed to help us adapt to any incidents, such as a broken-down vehicle in the queue.”
This mobilisation included assisting a woman who was in labour and stuck in the traffic. “We were able to help her with the customs officials to get to the hospital as quickly as possible.”
Pfund noted that “not all vehicles were checked for alcohol. Out of 685 drivers tested, 3.06% were above the legal limit.”
