November in Belgium significantly wetter and darker than normal

84.3 mm of rainfall was recorded in Brussels in November, marking the thirteenth month out of the last fourteen with above-average precipitation, according to the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM).

Rainfall occurred on 17 days last month compared to the usual 18.3 days in a typical November. The heaviest rainfall was recorded on 19 November with 35.4 mm in Bièvre in Wallonia.

By 27 November, it was announced that the annual rainfall record had already been broken. At that point, Brussels had accumulated 1,092.9 mm of rainfall, surpassing the previous record of 1,088.5 mm set in 2001.

The first snowfall of the season was also recorded last month, with a 25-centimetre blanket of snow observed in Mont-Rigi on 22 and 23 November.

In addition to being wetter than average, November was significantly darker. There were only 38 hours and 34 minutes of sunshine, far below the normal 65 hours and 46 minutes.

Temperatures were close to the seasonal averages, with a monthly mean of 7.3 degrees Celsius.

During the night of 24 to 25 November, a minimum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius was recorded, making it the warmest night of the last ten days of November since records began.
