Thousands of Telenet users across Belgium were unable to make calls or use mobile internet from 07:00 until around 12:15 on Tuesday. The internet and telecoms provider confirmed to The Brussels Times that the situation is back to normal now.
The large-scale outage meant that many Telenet clients could not use mobile internet or make calls across Belgium, but the network has been rebooted in the meantime and the issue has been resolved.
"The situation is normalising for the majority of our customers," Telenet spokesperson Bart Boone confirmed to The Brussels Times. "With a few exceptions, all our users can make calls again."
Planned maintenance works took place on Monday evening. "Unfortunately, something went wrong at the very end," said Boone. Since 07:00 on Tuesday, the network has been in restart mode and customers gradually regained access.
However, the after-effects of the problem may drag on for a while. "When a network reboots, many people try to make calls at the same time, which can cause localised network saturation. So an unstable connection may take some time."
Boone emphasised that there are no problems with people's fixed internet and television networks.
Update: This article was updated at 12:39 to reflect that the outage has been resolved.
