The swimming pool of Ixelles – the first public indoor bathing spot in Brussels – will re-open today (Saturday). To celebrate the anticipated return, people will be allowed to swim for free throughout the weekend.
The Ixelles swimming pool is iconic for many reasons. Built in 1904, it is the oldest indoor bathing spot in the region. It was also one of the first to introduce double-entry changing rooms.
However, over the years, its age became visible. The pool was closed in 2019 for major renovation work, expected to last around two years. After five years and many delays, an official opening date has been confirmed.
"It's official: the Ixelles swimming pool will reopen to the public on Saturday 14 December," Beliris, Brussels' public infrastructure company that renovated the pool, confirmed.
The municipality will be hosting a free festive weekend to mark the re-opening: on Saturday, swimmers will be welcomed in from 12:15 to 18:30. The day will be filled with entertainment. On Sunday, swimmers can again take the plunge for free from 09:30 to 17:30.
What can swimmers expect?
The swimming pool, located in a listed building on the aptly named Rue de la Natation (Swimming Street), has been given a thorough face-lift. "Swimmers can now enjoy a modern swimming area that is more comfortable, more accessible and has been restored to its historic splendour," Beliris said.
The pool is 29.20 metres long by 14.40 metres wide and 3.25 metres deep. The temperature in the swimming hall will be 29°C, while the water temperature will be 27°C.
From next week, the pool will be open to the public on:
- Monday and Wednesday from 07:30 to 18:00
- Tuesday and Thursday from 07:00 to 18:00
- Friday from 07:30 to 21:00
- Saturday from 09:30 to 17:30
- Sunday and public holidays from 09:30 to 17:30
As is the case at Brussels' other public swimming pools, the municipality offers cheap rates and reduced tariffs for those living in the commune. Adult admission costs €3.50 for an Ixelles resident and €5 for people from outside the commune.
Children under the age of 3 can swim for free, while over 65s, children under the age of 12 and students pay €2 (or €3 for non-Ixelles residents). The municipality also sells multi-passes and subscriptions at reduced prices.
