Brussels will go ahead with the plans to build an open-air swimming pool on the Béco canal, according to the new administration agreement of the City of Brussels.

The long-awaited canal pool has been in development since 2009 when an architectural competition was launched to design the project. But construction work has since faced multiple setbacks, with plans falling through and issues regarding how the work would be financed.

However, in the recently unveiled administration agreement, the new municipal council confirmed its commitment to the outdoor swimming pool that will be situated on the canal near Tour & Taxis.

The new pool is part of a series of projects to be developed within the next six years to improve the sports infrastructure of the city. While not revealing many concrete details, the City of Brussels' stated that the outdoor pool will be built through a public and private partnership.

The City of Brussels also outlined its intention to extend the opening times for swimming pools in the capital in an effort to improve the work-life balance of residents.

Architect Gérald Ledent, who had proposed a 300m outdoor pool design, told Bruzz he was glad to see the commitment to the plan, which will ultimately make swimming facilities more accessible in Brussels.
