The Kanal-Centre Pompidou Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art will not open until 2026. Major renovations are taking longer than expected.
The museum will be housed in the striking modernist building that was once a Citroën garage, on the Brussels canal's edge. The renovation was given the green light in 2021, and the former garage is being thoroughly renovated to suit its new purpose.
Once finished – the inauguration was first set in stone for autumn 2025 – it is expected to be one of the largest modern and contemporary art museums in the world.
However, Le Soir reported on Saturday that renovation work on the 42,000 square metres of the former Citroën garage on Place de l'Yser will not be completed before the end of next year, meaning it will likely only open its doors in 2006.
The renovation works started in 2021, with the Brussels Region, which has owned the building for 10 years, pumping €172 million into the project. When exactly the large multidisciplinary space will eventually open, remains unclear.
