Spaniards have a chance to win a total of €2.7 billion in the famous 'El Gordo' ('The fat one' in English) lottery on Sunday – a staggering €112 million more than last year. The draw begins at 09:00.

The lottery is celebrated yearly on 22 December and is considered to be the biggest, oldest and richest in the world. The first 'El Gordo' lottery draw took place in 1812 in Cadiz in southern Spain and has not missed a year since then.

Winners are announced in a ceremony lasting three to four hours, as smaller prizes are also drawn. Winning numbers are sung by students from Madrid's San Ildefonso boarding school.

The first prize is €4 million, which will be awarded 193 times this year, eight times more than last year.

The Spanish Government also benefits significantly from the lottery, collecting 20% in gaming tax on the winnings.
