'Hell bent on causing carnage' - At least 10 dead as vehicle strikes crowds in New Orleans

The FBI are treating as a "terrorist act" an attack on a crowd of people in New Orleans which left at least 10 people dead and over 30 injured. Officers have confirmed the driver of a vehicle ploughed into a crowd in New Orleans' tourist district was shot dead at the scene by police.

The emergency services said the incident happened at around 3.15 am local time, as a man in a pick-up truck deliberately drove at as many people as possible, killing at least ten and injuring 35 others. They say he was "hell bent" on creating carnage.

The area was crowded with revellers celebrating New Year's Eve in the historic and lively "French Quarter." The injured have been taken to several hospitals in the city. The majority of casualties are believed to be locals not tourists.

Police confirmed that the man responsible got out of his vehicle after driving into the crowds and started firing at police who were on the scene. Two officers were shot and injured. They also confirmed that improvised explosive devices were found in the vehicle.

US President Joe Biden is being kept up to date the with investigation, and has called New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to offer full federal support, the White House said.
