Belgium consumed 149 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas in the past year, according to data from gas grid operator Fluxys; this was less than in 2023, when gas consumption was 152 TWh.

The reduction was mainly due to decreased gas usage for electricity generation, which dropped from 32 TWh in 2023 to 23 TWh.

Data from high-voltage grid operator Elia revealed that gas-fired electricity was sidelined by cheaper French power.

Households used more natural gas, consuming 82 TWh compared to 80 TWh in 2023. Industrial consumption also increased, rising to 44 TWh from 40 TWh in 2023.

Belgium imported significantly more natural gas than it consumed, with a large portion re-exported to other countries.

Total transit to neighbouring countries reached 259 TWh last year, significantly down from 357 TWh in 2023. Germany was the largest recipient.
