European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has cancelled all her travel plans for the next two weeks due to illness.

A spokesperson from the Commission confirmed that von der Leyen is suffering from a severe case of pneumonia.

"The President has cancelled all her external appointments for the next two weeks." von der Leyen will conduct her official duties from her hometown of Hanover in Germany.

"If everything goes well, the President should fully recover by the middle of this month," he added.

One of the cancelled engagements includes a visit to Gdansk. She was scheduled to attend the start of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council with the entire European Commission on 9 and 10 January.

The visit will be rescheduled at a later date, according to the spokesperson.

The 66-year-old von der Leyen has led the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, since December 2019. She began a new five-year term last year.
