Russia seized approximately 3,600 square kilometres of territory in Ukraine in 2024, military blog Militarnyi reports on Sunday.

Militarnyi based its estimate on the map from the DeepState project, which is closely aligned with the Ukrainian army.

This loss of land is roughly equivalent to the size of the province of Liège.

The figures have not been officially confirmed.

By mid-December, the Ukrainian Telegram channel UA War Infographics estimated the loss at around 2,800 square kilometres.

The intensification of territory loss came after Ukraine’s summer offensive and its gains in Russian side of the Kursk region.

Since New Year, Russian troops have continued to advance.

In the past 24 hours, they reportedly captured areas near Kurakhove, close to the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, as well as in the town of Toretsk.
