Hidden Belgium: Antwerp story tapestries

The Antwerp comic artist Sam Vanallemeersch has created six modern tapestries to hang in Antwerp’s ancient Het Steen castle following a long renovation.

The works decorate a dark 17th-century room behind the tourist office. Woven by skilled workers at Flanders Tapestries, they illustrate the city’s history, architecture, fashion and food.

The tapestries are teeming with comic details that take time to pick out. You might even need to ask a local to explain some of the hidden jokes. Entry free during the tourist office opening hours.
