Half of electronic cigarette sellers are violating new stricter regulations, according to a report by Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen, Het Belang van Limburg and De Standaard.
In 2023, outgoing Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) introduced regulation aiming to curb the use electronic cigarettes by prohibiting flashy product design and slogans. Retailers were given until 2024 to sell their remaining stock.
18 months later, data provided by the Health Ministry shows that half of shopkeepers are ignoring the new rules. The non-compliance rate rises to 80% in the Brussels-Capital Region. Violations related to vape composition were found in two out of three inspections.
The data was requested by MP Els Van Hoof (CD&V) who expressed concern at the findings. She wants to eliminate the variety of flavours that make vaping seem enjoyable and healthy. She has submitted a bill to this effect, which is currently being reviewed by the Chamber of Representatives.
Vandenbroucke has promised harsher penalties if the high rate of violations continues. "And in the worst case, we will not hesitate to close businesses," he added.
