Energy contracts for green energy continue to attract a growing number of Belgians, according to an analysis of the year 2024 released on Wednesday by Wikipower, a company that compares energy prices.
The analysis reveals that last year, 77% of new contracts signed through its comparison platform were 100% green, compared to 65% in 2023 and 47% in 2022.
However, Wikipower highlights significant differences between regions. In Flanders, 82% of contracts were green, 81% in Wallonia, and only 50% in the Brussels region.
This disparity can be attributed to a more mature energy market in Flanders, where awareness campaigns and green energy offerings are more developed, and due to differences in commercial offerings between regions.
The report also notes that in 2024, preferences for these contracts have become uniform across age groups.
In 2022, about 70% of subscribers were young consumers (18-40 years old), who are generally more environmentally conscious, particularly through targeted communication campaigns.
Last year, the distribution of “green” contracts was almost equal between the two age groups (18-40 years old and 40 years and older).
Several factors explain the growing popularity of green contracts among Belgians, according to Wikipower.
First, awareness campaigns through educational and media initiatives have reached an increasingly broad audience, highlighting the benefits of the energy transition.
Secondly, Wikipower notes that the diversification of offers by energy suppliers, including the increased availability of green electricity contracts at competitive prices, has made green energy accessible to more households.
