Asylum seeker applications in Europe fall by over 10%

The number of asylum applications in the European Union, Norway, and Switzerland fell by approximately 12% last year, according to the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA).

The Malta-based agency recorded just over one million initial applications in the 27 EU Member States, as well as in Norway and Switzerland, based on figures obtained by the German Press Agency (DPA).

In 2023, the number of applications stood at 1.14 million.

Most of the applicants were from Syria (15%), followed by Afghanistan (8.7%), Venezuela (7.3%), and Turkey (5.5%).
