Belgian-American mathematician Ingrid Daubechies has been awarded a National Medal of Science in the United States, as reported by De Tijd and confirmed by a White House press release.
Originally from Limburg, Daubechies studied at the Dutch-speaking Free University of Brussels (VUB) before building her career in the United States. She is now a professor emeritus at Duke University in North Carolina.
Daubechies is renowned for her work on "wavelets", which are crucial in data compression, and she has received numerous awards for her contributions.
The Medal of Science recognises outstanding scientific contributions across various disciplines. Daubechies is one of fourteen laureates announced by outgoing US President Joe Biden.
