Belgium has taken command of a NATO operation to ensure safe waters in Europe, the Ministry of Defence announced in a press release on Friday.
The purpose of the operation is to protect critical infrastructure at sea. Underwater pipelines and cables have recently come under attack by covert sabotage operations, believed to be Russia in the context of its Ukraine invasion.
Last year, the NATO squadron SNMCMG1, Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1, was led by Germany.
German Commander Beata Król reflected on the milestones achieved during the past year, while thanking those who contributed to the success of the mission.
"I want to express my sincere gratitude for the unwavering backing from Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), which helped me navigate through rough waters."
Experienced Belgian frigate captain Erik Kockx will lead a predominantly Belgian staff on a Dutch ship.
Kockx will play a crucial role in ensuring maritime security in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, the Ministry of Defence stated.
