Over 1.5 million vans registered in EU in 2024

Sales of new vans in the European Union continued to rise last year with an 8.3% increase, reaching 1,586,688 units, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on Tuesday.

The increase was evident in the four key markets: up 13.7% in Spain, 8.4% in Germany, 1.1% in France, and 0.9% in Italy. However, the market declined by 2.6% in Belgium, from 67,549 units in 2023 to 65,780 last year.

Diesel engines remained the preferred choice for new van buyers in 2024. Diesel’s market share rose by 1.7 percentage points to 84.5%. In contrast, electric vehicles saw a significant decrease of 9.1%, reducing their market share from 7.2% to 6.1% in one year.

Diesel also dominated the truck segment, accounting for 95.1% of new registrations. However, the truck market declined by 6.3% in 2024, with 327,896 units sold. Spain experienced a notable 12% increase, while truck registrations fell 7.7% in Belgium, 6.9% in Germany, 2.9% in France, and 0.7% in Italy.

New bus sales in the EU grew by 9.2% in 2024, reaching 35,579 units, with Belgium seeing a 15.2% increase. Diesel remains a significant power source for buses, holding a 63.1% market share, though electric buses increased their share from 15.9% in 2023 to 18.5% last year.
