Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is under investigation in Italy for embezzlement,
The PM announced the investigation herself via Instagram on Tuesday. Ministers in Meloni's government are also implicated. However, an investigation means Meloni is under no obligation to resign.
The inquiry reportedly concerns the Italian authorities' release of a Libyan man Njeem Osama Almasri last week. The suspect was wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, but was released by Italy after having been detained at Turin airport, despite the warrant.
The Italian Government did not respond to the arrest warrant for General Almasri, head of the Libyan judicial police and in charge of the Mitiga detention centre.
The ICC has asked Italy for an explanation as to the reasons for the release that took place "without prior notice or consultation".
