Brussels Airlines will resume flights to and from Kinshasa on Friday 31 January, the airline announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The company had cancelled two flights to the Congolese capital, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, due to violence in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The situation in the DRC has deteriorated in recent days, with Goma, the main city in the east, under the control of the M23 rebel group and Rwandan troops.

In Kinshasa, located in the west, angry protesters have attacked several embassies, including those of Rwanda, accused by Congolese authorities of declaring war on the DRC, and of Kenya, France, Belgium, and the United States, which have been criticised for their inaction in the crisis.

Brussels Airlines said the resumption of fights to and from Kinshasa would be accompanied by additional security measures. Its crews will not stay overnight in Kinshasa at this time, so the return flight from Kinshasa to Brussels will make a technical stop in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the airline said.

The flight scheduled for Thursday has been delayed by 24 hours, it added.

Extra security measures are also in place for ground staff in the DRC, and the company’s office in central Kinshasa will remain closed for now, while passengers who do not wish to travel in the coming days can get a refund for their tickets.
