Ultrasport athlete Matthieu Bonne has ended his world record attempt in Taiwan after seven hours due to illness.
Bonne aimed to break the 48-hour running world record but was unable to recover from a respiratory infection, which heightened the risk of pneumonia, according to his team.
Bonne’s goal had been to run at least 500 kilometres in 48 hours, starting on Friday morning, as part of an ultramarathon in Taiwan.
However, he halted the attempt after seven hours because of the respiratory infection. The team’s statement clarified that, given the risk of pneumonia, they collectively decided to stop the challenge, so despite excellent preparation and determination, Bonne could not continue the race in Taipei.
Bonne, aged 31, sought to surpass the legendary 30-year-old ultramarathon record of 473 kilometres. The Taiwan challenge was one of three world records he aimed to break this year.
His team has promised to provide updates on future endeavours soon. For now, Matthieu will take time to recover and process this setback.
