The Belgian energy supplier Mega, the largest independent supplier in the country, has been sold to the Swiss energy company MET Group, reported the Dutch economic daily Financieel Dagblad on Sunday, citing entrepreneur and investor Pieter Schoen.
Mega had denied rumours of a sale last August. At the time, the company stated it was interested in new investments to continue its growth.
Dutch entrepreneurs Pieter Schoen and Theo de Rooij have now sold their majority stake in Mega Group International. “Our return on investment is very satisfactory,” Schoen told Financieel Dagblad, estimating the acquisition amount to be in the hundreds of millions of euros. Since joining Mega in 2018, the two men have overseen eight acquisitions by the company.
Thomas Coune and Michael Corhay, who founded Mega 12 years ago, will continue to lead the company after the sale. They are also believed to have sold part of their shares to MET Group.
Mega serves around 500,000 clients and has been operating in the Netherlands for two years as a minor player. The acquisition allows the Swiss MET Group, active in 17 countries, to significantly expand its customer base.
MET Group employs over 1,000 people.
Last August, the consumer protection association Testachats stated that Mega cannot simply ignore its existing contracts. “Even if the supplier completely merges with another company, the new supplier must in principle honour the existing contracts until their expiration,” said the association.
