Denmark announced on Sunday that  it will provide 405 million kroner (€54 million) to Ukraine for humanitarian aid and reconstruction. The announcement came on the eve of the third anniversary of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

The Danish Foreigh Ministry noted that Ukraine faces significant reconstruction needs as its infrastructure and production capacities have been heavily damaged, while the humanitarian situation remains severe, with United Nations estimates indicating nearly 13 million people there will need humanitarian aid by 2025.

About half of the Danish assistance will be allocated to humanitarian aid, including basic relief items such as food, medicine, water, and shelter for Ukrainians in the hardest-hit areas. The other half will be earmarked for reconstruction efforts.

“Denmark has affirmed that it will stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary,” Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasised.

The donation raises Denmark’s total humanitarian aid to Ukraine to over 1 billion kroner (€134 million) since the Russian invasion.

Denmark’s military aid to Ukraine has totalled approximately €7.2 billion.

This week, Minister Lokke and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed the need for Europe to significantly rearm, citing the growing threat from Russia.

Copenhagen also announced that it will increase its defence spending by 50 billion kroner (€6.7 billion) over the next two years.

With this announcement, Denmark’s defence effort is set to reach 3% of its GDP.
