Nearly 80% of flights scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Munich Airport have been cancelled due to a two-day strike by the Verdi union, according to airport operator FMG.

This amounts to over 1,300 flights, with more possible cancellations.

Verdi is using the strike to pressure ongoing wage negotiations in public services.

Strikes were also held at Düsseldorf and Cologne airports on Monday following failed negotiations on a public sector collective agreement.

Public transport and postal workers in several regions have also staged walkouts since January.

The unions are demanding salary increases, higher allowances for strenuous jobs, and three additional days of paid leave.

Over 2.5 million workers in education, administration and airports are affected.
