Citigroup, an American bank, mistakenly attempted to transferred $81 trillion to a customer’s account instead of $280.
According to the Financial Times, the incident occurred in April last year. It took 90 minutes for the error to be detected.
Two bank employees overlooked the mistake but a third banker eventually spotted it before the trillions actually landed in the account.
A spokesperson for Citi said that a transfer of such magnitude could not have been executed anyway.
In total, Citigroup recorded ten near-miss erroneous transfers of $1 billion or more last year, Financial Times reported, citing an internal bank report.
