A person was seriously injured in a road accident on the E42 motorway at the border between Antoing and Péruwelz on Saturday morning, according to firefighters.
Emergency services from Wallonie Picarde were alerted at 5:09 about an accident on the E42 motorway heading towards Mons.
A rescue pump, two ambulances, a medical emergency unit, a marking truck, and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene. The accident occurred near Maubray (Antoing) and Wasmes-Audemetz-Briffoeil (Péruwelz).
For reasons yet to be determined, the driver of a powerful car lost control while travelling towards Mons.
“The car veered off, crossed the right-hand safety barriers, and hit the stump of a tree before coming to a stop. Upon our arrival, the passenger had already exited the wreckage. However, the driver had to be extricated. He was conscious,” explained Captain Gil Van Houck, who led the intervention.
Severely injured, the driver was stabilised by the medical emergency unit and then transferred to the emergency department of Union Hospital ChWapi in Tournai.
