Local police in the Beringen-Ham-Tessenderlo zone conducted a search operation on Friday evening for a vehicle with stolen number plates.
The federal police deployed a helicopter for the manhunt. Around 22:15, two suspects were arrested in central Beringen. The men are from the Seraing region, according to police reports on Saturday.
At around 20:30 on Friday, a police team from the Beringen-Ham-Tessenderlo zone was alerted by an ANPR camera near the Leopoldsburg border, which had detected the suspicious vehicle.
Shortly after, the team spotted a vehicle with the stolen plates and initiated a pursuit. The chase involved high speeds and multiple serious violations, which have been documented.
The vehicle crashed on Brouwersstraat in Beringen centre, and the occupants fled on foot.
Several police units, assisted by the Heusden-Zolder and Kempenland zones, were dispatched to help. The federal police helicopter also joined the operation. Due to effective collaboration, one suspect was found at the old Midas garage on Brugstraat at around 10:15 p.m. The helicopter later located a second suspect in a nearby wooded area.
The suspects, aged 28 and 31, are from the Seraing vicinity. The Limburg prosecutor’s office has been informed about the manhunt and the arrests.
