Heavy congestion formed on Monday morning before 08:00 approaching the E411 tunnel under the Carrefour Léonard junction, where major renovation work has begun.
Road users are experiencing delays of around twenty minutes from Hoeilaart, according to Touring Mobilis.
The Flemish Traffic Centre advises commuters to avoid the E411 towards Brussels in the mornings if possible. In response, SNCB has increased train capacity.
From Monday, traffic towards Brussels and Namur is being funnelled through the Namur direction tunnel.
In a few months, this arrangement will change, with traffic in both directions using the Brussels direction tunnel instead.
Drivers heading towards Brussels will be restricted to a single lane until the work is completed.
On the Brussels Ring Road, traffic is expected to improve since the reopening of the inner ring tunnel during the day on Saturday.
The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) will now only carry out tunnel work in the evenings and at night.
On weekdays, both tunnels will be open from 05:30 (am) to avoid disrupting morning traffic. At 20:30, the tunnels will be closed again.
According to the current schedule, all work on the E411 and R0 tunnels is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
