Thousands gathered in various towns in German-speaking East Belgium to witness the traditional Rosenmontag carnival parades.

Seven parades took place on this Rose Monday in Büllange, Bütgenbach, Oudler, Schönberg, and Faymonville. The largest parades, in terms of both spectators and participants, were held in Eupen and La Calamine.

In La Calamine, approximately 3,500 people paraded through the streets under bright sunshine. This northern town of the German-speaking Community saw 107 folk groups with their floats and brass bands participate in the costume parade, which stretched over 1.5 kilometres. Thousands lined the 7.5-kilometre route to admire the inventive costumes and floats.

The public collected several tonnes of sweets and trinkets, distributed by participants, to the tune of traditional patois songs and the carnival rallying cry, alaaf!. This is a traditional greeting during carnival, which originated from the Cologne carnival in Germany.

In Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking Community, there were 126 registered groups, floats, and bands. Around midday, thousands of participants set off.

The beautiful floats and costumes combined with sunny weather to offer a spectacular show for visitors.

Themes were varied in the Eupen parade, featuring mermaids, savanna animals, and even construction cones.

Rose Monday marks the end of five days of exuberant festivities in the German-speaking Community and neighbouring areas. It is certain the celebrations will continue throughout the day and into the night.
