Spring finally seems to have sprung in Belgium, with temperatures of up to 18°C this week. What better to celebrate the long-awaited sunny skies and school holidays than by exploring one of Brussels' local Carnival celebrations?
The Carnival period varies across countries and cities, although it typically takes place anywhere between January and March. It is commonly celebrated in the days leading up to Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday (5 March this year), the 40 days before Easter. Carnival is intended as a way to prepare for the period of fasting and abstinence.
Although Lent has already begun, Carnival is still in full swing in Belgium. While there are festivities across the country, there are plenty to enjoy on your doorstep as well. Find the best celebrations happening in Brussels this weekend below.
