Team Fouad Ahidar has formally requested an extraordinary council meeting in Molenbeek due to the continued absence of Mayor Catherine Moureaux, who will be away until the end of the month.
The team stated on Thursday that they seek clarification on the current administration and wish to address unanswered questions from the last council meeting. MR is also attempting to gather enough signatures for an extraordinary council meeting next Wednesday, according to Bruzz.
The mayor’s absence for several weeks has caused uncertainty and raised questions about decision-making and the proper functioning of municipal services.
"The residents of Molenbeek deserve to know who is truly governing their municipality and how ongoing matters are handled in the mayor’s absence," said Rachid Mahdaoui, leader of Team Fouad Ahidar Molenbeek. He called for clear information on measures taken to ensure the continuity of public services and the delegation of responsibilities within the council.
Mayor Moureaux has been absent since early February for medical reasons and is expected to be out until the end of March. "Therefore, with the support of the MR and Les Engagés opposition members, Team Fouad Ahidar has decided to demand an extraordinary council meeting on 12 March 2025," the statement read.
"We are now in March, and Molenbeek still lacks a municipal policy declaration. This situation harms the municipality’s public policy in various areas. How long will we wait? Until a hypothetical return of the mayor in April?" questioned Hassan Ouassari, a council member for Les Engagés.
