Dutch police have strong evidence to support suspicions that a fire that destroyed many homes and shops in the Dutch city of Arnhem on Thursday morning may have been deliberately set, several independent sources told local newspaper De Gelderlander.

The massive blaze engulfed around ten shops, residences, and storage spaces in the city centre during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. Firefighters managed to control the fire by Thursday afternoon.

Residents had to evacuate their homes in a hurry.

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported so far, but firefighters warn that victims may still be trapped under the rubble.

Sources indicate that arson is being seriously considered as a possible cause of the disaster, and authorities are investigating whether individuals reportedly seen near the site shortly before the fire broke out were involved.
