Visitors flocked to the Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Pompidou in Paris this weekend, eager to see the collection one last time before the permanent exhibition closes for renovations.

On Monday evening, the museum, which had 3.2 million visitors last year, will close. The artworks will be moved by lorry to storage facilities or other museums in Paris, elsewhere in France, or abroad.

The entire Centre Pompidou will close on 22 September after its final temporary exhibition to undergo extensive asbestos removal and renovation works, scheduled to be completed by 2030.

Over the weekend, the public filled the multicoloured building’s levels 4 and 5, which house around 2,000 pieces of art across 12,000 square metres, to celebrate the farewell. Admission was free, and the museum offered cultural and festive events including performances, workshops, and DJ sets.

The museum’s collection includes works by Dali, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian, and Matisse, among others. It also features installations such as “Le Magasin de Ben,” which was frequently updated with new objects by the artist until his death last year.
