Belgian freelance photojournalist Simon Clément was arrested in Mizoram, northeast India, near the Myanmar border, last week.
According to reliable sources from Belga and local media, Clément is suspected by Indian authorities of illegally crossing the Myanmar border. He was found in possession of an empty bullet casing, which he claims was meant as a keepsake.
Such actions are sensitive in India due to the presence of Indian insurgents hiding in Myanmar. Myanmar is deeply divided, with numerous armed groups. Four years ago, Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted and imprisoned by coup leaders.
Clément has been charged for possessing the empty casing and crossing the border illegally. It is currently unclear how long he will remain in custody.
