Tourist operators report a positive initial assessment following the carnival holidays in Wallonia, announced the regional Tourism Minister, Valérie Lescrenier, on Sunday.
The carnivals, boosted by radiant weather, attracted large crowds over the past two weeks.
In Binche, festivities were held under sunny skies, drawing more than 150,000 spectators over three days. Minister Lescrenier noted this as a resounding success, highlighting the lively nature of Walloon folkloric heritage.
Elsewhere in Wallonia, the scenario was similar, with record attendance figures. Visitor numbers to natural spaces, hiking routes, and labelled sites also saw a significant rise.
However, the situation was bleak initially. “The first week was dampened by grey skies, persistent humidity, and non-synchronised holidays of our neighbouring regions, resulting in subdued attendance at our traditional attractions and accommodations,” explained Lescrenier.
The second week, coinciding with the holidays of the Flemish community, showed a much more positive outcome. Spring-like temperatures notably boosted attendance at parks and outdoor sites.
