The city of Bruges has implemented several measures after asbestos was released during a large fire on Saturday.

Residents within the affected perimeter are advised to postpone travel and avoid touching soot particles.

The fire broke out at the De Scheemaeker bicycle company in Sint-Andries on Saturday. Firefighters controlled the blaze after several hours, with no reported injuries. Analysis revealed asbestos had been released during the fire.

A specialised firm is assessing where harmful soot particles have settled. The perimeter extends from Waggelwater towards Expresweg, the Bruges-Ostend railway line, and the E40 motorway.

Residents are urged to place wet cloths at their doors, remove shoes before entering, keep windows and doors closed, and keep pets indoors. “We are taking various measures and exercising additional caution to minimise asbestos exposure and prevent further spread,” said Mayor Dirk De fauw (CD&V).

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. A fire expert from the public prosecutor’s office will inspect the site on Sunday.
