US President Donald Trump announced late Sunday night that he will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as part of the ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
"I will speak to President Putin on Tuesday," Trump told journalists aboard the presidential plane, adding that "a lot of work has been done." He mentioned that extensive discussions have already taken place with both Ukraine and Russia, including talks about asset sharing, specifically land and power plants.
The Kremlin stated on Friday that Putin had given US special envoy Steve Witkoff a message for Trump regarding a proposed 30-day truce, which Ukraine has accepted but Russia has not.
Putin has demanded significant concessions for ending the conflict, including Ukraine ceding five regions annexed by Moscow, abandoning its ambitions to join NATO, and dismantling its current government.
On Saturday, during a virtual summit hosted by London, around thirty leaders from various countries and organisations supporting Ukraine decided to collectively pressure Russia to agree to a ceasefire, amid suspicions that Russia intends to continue the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who recently appointed a team of negotiators for potential peace talks, believes that Russia is trying to secure a stronger position on the battlefield.
