The Belgian Workers’ Party (PTB-PVDA) has announced a march on 27 April to protest "against social cuts and for peace," amid the new Federal Government's push for more defence but lower public spending.

Party leader Raoul Hedebouw and Flemish Parliament group leader Jos d’Haese made the announcement on Monday morning via a press release and radio appearances on La Première and Bel RTL.

Hedebouw expressed concern over the government’s emphasis on significant defence investments and proposed pension cutbacks.

"The Arizona government wants us to work longer for less pension. It aims to undermine our rights and wages, fostering a society where only the wealthiest benefit and the working class, youth, and vulnerable bear the cost," said Hedebouw.

The PTB-PVDA’s research department also claims that Belgian pensions for an average salary worker are €415 per month lower compared to neighbouring countries.

The party advocates for making the super-rich contribute fairly, stopping the depletion of social security funds, and rejecting the arms race. "We want a society based on solidarity and sustainable investments in our industry, social security, and peace," Hedebouw emphasised.

The march will start from Brussels Central Station at 14:00 on Sunday 27 April, coinciding with the first weekend of the French-speaking community’s spring holidays.
