The Chinese automaker BYD has developed a new battery and charging system for electric vehicles that can charge a battery in approximately five minutes, nearly as fast as refuelling a petrol car.
Tests on the new Han L sedan revealed these results, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu announced on Monday.
He believes that this fast charging capability could convince many hesitating consumers to buy electric vehicles.
BYD plans to roll out the new technology as quickly as possible. This move could potentially boost sales further for BYD, which has already overtaken Tesla in the sector.
For reference, it takes around 15 minutes for Tesla’s Superchargers to provide a range of 275 kilometres. However, Tesla has an extensive charging infrastructure network in place.
