The US Space Force has relieved Colonel Susannah Meyers, the commander of Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, of her duties.
The Space Force cited a loss of confidence in Meyers’ leadership, following her criticism of President Donald Trump’s administration.
The decision was made on Thursday, affecting the only US base on the semi-autonomous island of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark and has drawn Trump’s interest.
Vice President JD Vance recently visited the base, much to the displeasure of Copenhagen.
"Commanders are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct, particularly in maintaining impartiality in their duties," read a brief statement.
Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesperson, added on social media that "actions to undermine the chain of command or thwart President Trump’s agenda are not tolerated by the Department of Defense."
According to the specialised website Military.com, Meyers sent an email to all staff members of the base, including Danish and Greenlandic employees, after Vance’s visit on 28 March.
In the email, she distanced herself from the Vice President’s criticism of Denmark and the management of Greenland, stating that Vance’s concerns did not reflect the views of Pituffik Space Base.
