German police shot and killed a man after he attacked a car with an axe in Hilzingen, southwest Germany, authorities said on Thursday.
The 64-year-old man managed to break the car window, but the mother and child inside were able to escape unharmed.
When police arrived at the scene, the perpetrator turned on the officers, slightly injuring a police officer. Her colleagues then opened fire on the man. Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he died of his injuries at the scene.
An investigation has been launched.
