The United States has demanded that Rwanda immediately stop supporting the Congolese rebel group M23 and withdraw its troops from eastern Congo, U.S. Africa advisor Massad Boulos said on Thursday.

“Rwanda should cease all military support to M23, and withdraw all Rwandan troops from DRC territory,” Boulos said during an online press conference, following meetings with the presidents of both Congo and Rwanda earlier this month.

The M23 rebels launched a rapid offensive in eastern Congo in December. The group managed to take control of Goma,  capital of North Kivu province, and Bukavu, capital of South Kivu province, earlier this year.
