US airstrikes on Thursday against a strategic oil port in Yemen have killed 80 people, according to Houthi rebels.

The Houthis, who control large parts of war-torn Yemen, also claimed to have launched new attacks against US aircraft carriers off the coast and Israel.

The US military said it targeted and destroyed the port of Ras Issa in the Hodeida region, controlled by the Houthis, on Thursday.

The United States intended to eliminate this source of oil for the Houthis and deprive them of the illegal revenue that has funded their actions to terrorise the region for over a decade, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

The death toll from the strikes has risen to 80, with 150 injured, Houthi rebel channel Al-Masirah reported, citing local authorities.

Earlier, Anees Alasbahi, spokesperson for the Houthi Health Ministry, told French news agency AFP that 198 people had been killed in American bombings since March.

The administration of US President Donald Trump announced, on 15 March, a major military offensive against the Houthis to compel them to stop threatening ships on crucial international trade routes.
