A grandfather who was driving a car that fell into the Bruges ring canal on Friday has died, the West Flanders public prosecutor confirmed on Saturday.
Emergency services were called around 13:40 on Friday about an accident near the Warandebrug swing bridge in Bruges. A vehicle with three passengers, a grandfather and his two grandchildren, had fallen into the water. One child reportedly managed to free himself, while the grandfather and the other child were taken to hospital in critical condition.
The bridge was open at the time of the accident, and its barrier was lowered. However, the driver did not stop and drove into the canal. No other vehicle was involved in the incident.
The health condition of the grandchild taken to the hospital remains unknown.
