The United States saw a nearly 12% drop in foreign tourists last month compared to the same period last year, the Washington Post reported on Friday.
The number of European travellers visiting the U.S. in March fell by about 17%.
The newspaper analysed data from the International Trade Administration, part of the Department of Commerce. This marks the first significant decrease since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Experts warn that if this trend continues, it could result in billions in losses for the U.S. tourism industry.
Foreign tourists are especially concerned about being turned away or even detained upon entry to the United States. Recently, several travellers, including German citizens who had all necessary documentation, were denied entry and detained. Some were held in deportation centres for several weeks.
