A fisherman died on Sunday near Sydney after being swept away by large waves, increasing the death toll from Easter weekend drownings in Australia to six amidst colossal waves hitting the east coast.

Emergency services attempted to rescue two people who were swept away while fishing at Wattamolla Beach. Unfortunately, one could not be revived, as reported by New South Wales Police. The second person, a 14-year-old boy, is in stable condition in hospital.

On Saturday, waves reaching 3.5 metres in some areas claimed another fisherman in southern New South Wales.

Three people had already drowned on Friday in New South Wales, while a woman died near Melbourne.

Additionally, two people have been missing at sea since Friday, one off the coast of Sydney and the other near Melbourne, with searches ongoing.

Surf Life Saving Australia issued a warning on Thursday stating that strong swells would create dangerous surfing conditions along the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria.
